The Ibanez SR basses were designed with performance in mind. Their thin lightweight bodies reduce strain on your back, their active pickups system makes find the right tone for any gig a breeze and the neck is thin making even the most complicated lines easy to get your head around. The SR800 is possibly the perfect workhorse bass hitting that great point of playability, tone and value for money.
Ibanez do not build bad guitars. All the way from their basic Gio series to their Prestige options Ibanez love using great quality wood across the board. Made with a Mahogany body topped with stunning Poplar Burl this adds a bit of weight to the bass compared to other SR models but really pushes out the low end rumble.
The neck is the usual extra slim design Ibanez is known for but this time using materials not often found at this price point. Made using a 5 piece ply of Jatoba and Bubinga mix the neck not only looks great but also plays like a dream. These materials can handle and extreme amount of tension meaning they will not budge under thicker strings.
One of the goals of the SR range is to make sure that no matter the situation this bass will work. From jazz nights to crushing death metal Ibanez want the SR to be the bass you go to. They handle this by using quality pickups like the Bartolini Mk-1 soapbars in this bass mixed with a powerful 3 band EQ and 3 way mid frequency switch letting you dial in the exact tone you have in your head.
Here's what Ibanez say about the SR800
The new SR800 series features a low-gloss exotic wood body and gold hardware for premium looks. The thin, sturdy and stable Jatoba/Bubinga neck offers superior playability when combined with the extended neck joint, making the higher frets easily accessible. The equipped Ibanez Custom Electronics 3-band EQ features a fully independent bass, treble, and mid controls with a wide boost/cut range, and works in tandem with the MK1 pickups to provide enhanced definition, maximum accuracy and equal string response, all while being virtually noiseless. The mid-frequency select switch allows for the selection of a specific mid-frequency range to help accentuate the bass's dynamic tone. (In 2016, SR300s and 500s are also equipped with Ibanez Custom Electronics 3-band eq w/Mid frequency.)
